Shantz was born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1925. His brother, Billy Shantz, also played major league baseball. His career spanned almost twenty years and began with Connie Mack's A's in 1949. He continued to be a favorite of the Philadelphia fans until the A's move to Kansas City in 1954.
